KENYA

A WILD LIFE INDUCED TRAQUILITY

A Time in the Wild”, the only description I can use to describe my adventurous visit to Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.

School had just closed and so me and my family planned a four days trip to Nairobi; to relax and unwind and just let go of all the stress and tension and I couldn’t think of a better way to do that than to spend the week with the wildlife and all it has to offer. The sub-tropical city had so much to offer, with its cool weather temperature, thanks to the city being 5,899 feet above sea level, the city seemed so alive, especially at night.

After a short stop at Addis Ababa, we landed safely in the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with Ethiopian airline at exactly 1am, the drive to the hotel, Trademark hotel village market, was extremely entertaining to say the least. I see why Nairobi is termed as a vibrant city, it seemed to come alive at night, with the various locals selling their goods and going around bartering, I could spot some visitors like us touring the city with smiles on their faces and mingling with various locals who showed them the various arts that the city had to offer, like that was not enough, the afro upbeat music coming from various nightclubs and champagne bars was so loud and enticing,

I was already dancing in my seat in the car, the street lights and car lights created a beautiful symphony with the atmosphere and the beauty of the night, it gave Nairobi a warm and comfortable atmosphere and I knew this trip was going to be just what I needed to relax

The thirty minute drive from the airport to the hotel finally came to an end. I and my family were so tired, we lodged in immediately and went to our various rooms to sleep, the double bed hotel room that my sister booked for just the two of us was so beautiful offering a clear view of the city with the clear glass window to the left of the room, the lights from the city reflecting in the room, it gave it such a homely vibe. I admired the beauty of the room for a little while and headed straight to bed, once my head touched the pillow, I was out like a light.

The plan for the trip was to use three days to go to Nairobi National Park, Paradise Garden and Stedmak Animal Zoo, when I said I was going to spend time with the wild life, I was not playing. One major reason why I chose Nairobi, Kenya is because they are also known as the ‘Safari city of the world’ and they provide good hospitality. I was so excited to go to the park, I rushed my family out of the hotel and I can say it was worth the excitement.

Nairobi National Park Safari Life: An Adventure into Urban Wilderness

Nairobi's effortlessly blended modern and traditional elements are what catch people's eye at first. Nothing fully prepares you for the transition from the busy metropolis to the serene surroundings of Nairobi National Park, even though the city's vibrant vitality is obvious.

As we went past the park's main entrance, the urbanisation quickly disappeared and was replaced by vast savannahs with acacia trees strewn throughout. The 117 square km park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including buffalo, lions, leopards, and more than 400 species of birds. How would you feel if you moved from a busy city to a serene rural area? Our first game drive was an incredible experience. Early in the morning is the best time to watch wildlife, and we had no trouble at all. Zebras in peace, their bright stripes creating a mesmerising shadow on the golden grass as they grazed. Nearby, giraffes were gathering leaves from the tops of trees, their long necks slack in the soft morning light. Imagine seeing zebras and giraffes in their natural habitat. What appeals to you the most about this sight?

We went to a Maasai village close to the park in the morning. The Maasai people gave us a warm welcome and told us tales of their customs, culture, and close ties to the earth. Their lively manner of life and tenacity made an impression. We also danced with their massi native dancers, our rhythm matched as we all vibed and danced to a wonderful and vibrant native music.

We started the morning by going to the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, which provides care and shelter for orphaned elephants. It was headed set out in the afternoon to locate the park's elusive predators. We were able to monitor cheetahs searching the horizon for prey and lions relaxing in the shade with the assistance of knowledgeable guides. Witnessing these magnificent creatures in their native environment is an incredible experience. warming and educational to watch these habitats being fed and playing in the mud. We visited the waterholes in the park as the sun started to set. There were so many different kinds of birds that I was astonished by how diverse they were from the graceful air ostrich to the amazing other habitats.

The park's distinct location between the urban and natural was poignantly brought to mind as the sun set over the savannah and the outline of Nairobi's skyline appeared in the distance. Nairobi National Park is a real example of how urban growth and environmental preservation must coexist in harmony. Any lover of the outdoors must visit this place because of its accessibility and richness. This adventure into the urban wilderness demonstrates the park's commitment to wildlife conservation while providing an unmatched safari experience within a short distance from a thriving metropolis.

A Journey Through the Stedmak Animal Zoo

The sun beat down on the verdant expanse of the Stedmak Animal Zoo, promising a day filled with wonder and adventure. As I entered the sprawling park, the air hummed with the vibrant calls of exotic birds and the gentle rumble of unseen beasts. It was a symphony of nature's orchestra, inviting me to step into a world beyond my own.

My journey began in the African Savannah, where towering giraffes gracefully stretched their necks to reach the highest leaves. The air crackled with the energy of a pride of lions, their golden coats shimmering in the afternoon sun. I watched in awe as a family of zebras grazed peacefully, their stripes a mesmerizing blend of black and white against the backdrop of the vast open plains.

The journey continued to the lush Amazon rainforest, where the air throbbed with life. Monkeys swung through the canopy, their playful chatter echoing through the dense foliage. A vibrant macaw, its feathers a kaleidoscope of colors, perched on a branch, its piercing gaze fixed on me. The rainforest pulsed with an unseen energy, a reminder of the planet's incredible biodiversity.

The Arctic tundra brought a stark contrast, a frozen world inhabited by majestic polar bears. Their imposing size and powerful presence commanded respect, reminding me of the fragility of these magnificent creatures and the importance of preserving their habitat.

Throughout the zoo, I encountered creatures from all corners of the globe, each with its own unique story to tell. From the playful antics of the playful otters to the graceful elegance of the snow leopards, the zoo was a tapestry of life, a testament to the incredible diversity of our planet.

The Stedmak Animal Zoo wasn't just a collection of animals; it was an experience. The well-designed enclosures provided a glimpse into the animals' natural habitats, allowing visitors to connect with them in an authentic and immersive way. Informative signage shared fascinating facts about each species, deepening my appreciation for their unique characteristics and the challenges they face in the wild.

As the day drew to a close, I left the zoo with a renewed sense of wonder and a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all living things. The Stedmak Animal Zoo was more than just a place to see animals; it was a place to learn, to reflect, and to be inspired by the beauty and resilience of the natural world. It was a reminder that we have a responsibility to protect these magnificent creatures and ensure their survival for generations to come.

Just like that, my four days in kenya passed by, with the last day used to taste their delicious delicacies such as Matoke which a mashed plantain dish and to enjoy Nairobi’s wonderful hospitality. I had such great fun and I would surely go again. The freshness of the air cleared my head compared to that of Abuja and I felt a sense of tranquil that I have never felt in Abuja. The people and the animals seemed so intuned with their enviroment that I can not forget such experience. I arrived back in Abuja with a special joy in my heart that only kenya could induce. If I was asked to recommend a travel spot where one can have intimate time with family or friends and get peace and quiet while learning and trying new things, Nairobi, kenya will definitely be it.
